How did we measure it?
We asked five engines the same 32 unbranded questions on 9 October and again on 12 October 2026, two samples per question per run, through the DataForSEO answer-capture service with the market set to the United States. That gave 640 answers, 128 from each engine. The engines are ChatGPT with web search forced on, Gemini, Perplexity (Sonar), Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026).
The questions are the ones a sales leader types when looking for AI help, for example “AI agents for B2B sales teams”, “managed AI for a sales team”, “Salesforce Agentforce alternative for mid-market companies” and “AI SDR tool vs hiring SDRs”. A source counts once per answer, however many of its pages the answer links. Subdomains count separately, so pipeline.zoominfo.com and zoominfo.com are two sources. We count citations, which are the pages an engine shows as its evidence, and we do not score whether the answer text recommends a vendor.
The sample is one market, one week and two samples per question. Read the counts as a map of where each engine looks, and expect them to move between weeks.
Which sources do the engines cite most?
YouTube led with 109 of 640 answers (17%), followed by LinkedIn at 77 and Salesforce at 67 (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). Reddit (52) and ZoomInfo (50) came next, and HubSpot, Apollo and monday.com each appeared in about 40 to 50 answers.
| Source | Answers citing it | Share of 640 answers | Prompts it appeared on |
|---|---|---|---|
| youtube.com | 109 | 17% | 30 of 32 |
| linkedin.com | 77 | 12% | 21 of 32 |
| salesforce.com | 67 | 10% | 17 of 32 |
| reddit.com | 52 | 8% | 19 of 32 |
| pipeline.zoominfo.com | 50 | 8% | 13 of 32 |
| hubspot.com | 49 | 8% | 15 of 32 |
| apollo.io | 40 | 6% | 11 of 32 |
| monday.com | 39 | 6% | 10 of 32 |
| autobound.ai | 30 | 5% | 5 of 32 |
| artisan.co | 29 | 5% | 6 of 32 |
Three of the five most cited sources are platforms where people talk (YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit). The rest are vendor and data-provider sites. A buyer who researches only vendor websites misses the spaces that most often back an AI answer.
How do the five engines differ?
They use different shelves. Google AI Overviews cited YouTube in 88 of its 128 answers (69%), and ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cited YouTube in none of theirs (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). ChatGPT leaned on vendor sites (HubSpot in 34 answers, Salesforce in 27, Clay in 23). Perplexity split its top places between LinkedIn, monday.com and ZoomInfo at 22 answers each. Google AI Mode favoured Reddit (23) ahead of YouTube (21).
| Engine | Answers with at least one citation | Different sites cited | Three most cited sources (answers) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (web search on) | 128 of 128 | 399 | hubspot.com (34), salesforce.com (27), clay.com (23) |
| Gemini | 111 of 128 | 171 | pipeline.zoominfo.com (14), monday.com (10), tenderbolt.ai (8) |
| Perplexity (Sonar) | 128 of 128 | 308 | linkedin.com (22), monday.com (22), pipeline.zoominfo.com (22) |
| Google AI Overviews | 125 of 128 | 460 | youtube.com (88), linkedin.com (36), reddit.com (24) |
| Google AI Mode | 108 of 128 | 185 | reddit.com (23), youtube.com (21), linkedin.com (18) |
Gemini returned a citation in 111 of 128 answers and AI Mode in 108 of 128. The other three engines cited something every time or nearly every time.
How often do the engines agree?
Seldom. Of the 1,094 sites cited, 836 (76%) appeared in a single engine, 258 appeared in two or more, 51 appeared in four or more and 16 appeared in all five (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026).
The 16 sites that all five engines cited: alicelabs.ai, apollo.io, artisan.co, autobound.ai, demandbase.com, factors.ai, hubspot.com, marketbetter.ai, mixmax.com, monday.com, salesforge.ai, salesmotion.io, sybill.ai, tenderbolt.ai, unifygtm.com, zapier.com. They are the sources a buyer will meet whichever engine they ask, and a sensible first reading list. The list holds sales-AI vendor domains and no social platform: YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit lead the totals but each is missing from at least one engine.
What kinds of page do the engines cite?
Of 4,797 citations, 891 (19%) point to a URL whose path contains a list word such as best, top, compared or alternatives, and 512 (11%) point to a homepage (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). The classification reads the URL only, so treat it as a floor for roundups.
| Kind of page | Citations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| List or roundup URL | 891 | 19% |
| Vendor or site homepage | 512 | 11% |
| YouTube, LinkedIn or Reddit post | 372 | 8% |
| Other page | 3,022 | 63% |
The most cited single pages were apollo.io (homepage) (20 answers), clay.com (homepage) (19), tenderbolt.ai/en (17), autobound.ai/blog/ai-competitor-analysis-tools-for-sales-teams (16) and zapier.com/blog/ai-sales-assistant (14). Vendor homepages sit among the pages cited most often.
What should a buyer shortlisting AI tools do with this?
Ask the same question in at least three engines and write down the sources each one cites. Two engines giving the same vendor is a stronger signal than one engine giving it twice.
Open the cited roundups and look for a written method: who was compared, on what criteria, and whether the publisher sells one of the tools. A list that publishes its criteria is easier to check than a list that does not.
Open a few of the YouTube and Reddit sources too, since Google's two engines cite them most. Then ask each shortlisted vendor which of your three biggest manual jobs (the use-case library lists 28 common ones) it covers end to end, and what a person still approves.
Where does Hastings appear in this data?
Hastings publishes this report, so here is its own result: hastings.ai was cited in 6 of the 640 answers, on two of the 32 questions (“managed AI operating system” and “AI morning briefing for sales teams with account news and pipeline changes”), and ChatGPT named Hastings in 3 answers (source: Hastings panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). This page ranks no vendor. Read about the company on the managed AI operating system page or in the comparison with ChatGPT Enterprise.
